Project-basedlearning (PBL), an approach where students tackle real-world challenges withfaculty guidance, has gained popularity in engineering programs in the US because ofits combination of actual situational problems and active learningtechniques. Worcester PolytechnicInstitute (WPI), a small, nationally ranked science and engineering universityin Massachusetts,is recognized as a pioneer in PBL as the university has employed PBL as thecore of its undergraduate education for 40 years. This talk presents how WPI has managed tosend more than 50% of its engineering students to its more than 30 projectcenters around the globe for a PBL experience. It also presents data showingthe long-lasting impact of the combination of PBL and overseas experience, asstudents indicate the impact of overseas PBL experiences on their professionaland personal development well after graduation.
