Translation and Society The 2023 National Conference on Socio-Translation Studies Opened at Tongji University

Translation and Society The 2023 National Conference on Socio-Translation Studies was held at Tongji University from October 13th to 15th. This conference was organized by the Committee of Socio-Translation of the Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, hosted by School of Foreign Studies at Tongji University, and co-sponsored by Tongji University Press. Over 200 experts and scholars from across the country participated in the conference.

LV Peiming, the Executive Vice President of Tongji University, and WANG Hongtao, the President of the Committee of Socio-Translation of the Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. During the keynote presentation session, Professor ZHA Mingjian from Shanghai International Studies University, Professor FU Jingmin from Shanghai University, Professor PENG Qinglong from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professors LAN Hongjun and HUANG Zhonglian from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Professor REN Dongsheng from Ocean University of China, Professor REN Wen from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Professor WU Yun from Tongji University provided in-depth insights into various dimensions of theory and practice, core and periphery, history and prospects of social translation studies. 

In the featured forum, ZHANG Xian, Director of the Literature Editorial Department of Social Sciences in China Press, FU Jingmin, Editor-in-Chief of Shanghai Journal of Translators, LV Shenglu, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Language Education, PENG Qinglong, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Philosophy and Social Sciences) as well as senior editor ZHENG Minyu from Journal of Foreign Languages, and Editor-in-Chief CHEN Yong from the Journal of PLA University of Foreign Languages, shared insights on the characteristics of their journals, review processes, column arrangements, topic planning, etc. The editors also engaged in face-to-face discussions with young students and answered their questions. 

In the subsequent panel discussions, scholars from various regions discussed topics such as the development and pathways of socio-translation disciplines, theoretical innovation and methods in socio-translation studies, socio-translation studies and the international dissemination of Chinese discourse, socio-translation studies and the translation of Chinese literature for foreign audiences, socio-translation studies and research on translation history and translators, and socio-translation studies and multi-modal research with technology empowerment.

Finally, FU Jingmin, Honorary President of the Committee of Socio-Translation of the Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, delivered the closing speech. He summarized his impressions of the conference as enormous vitality, broad topics, and enthusiastic commitment. He also called on the attending scholars to work together with sincerity and unity to jointly write a new chapter in the research of socio-translation studies.
