Recently, the 26th FLTRP·ETIC Cup National English Debating Competition Finals, hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University and organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press along with other organizations, commenced. A total of 141 teams from universities across the country who had advanced to this stage engaged in fierce competition. The national finals were divided into two phases: an online round-robin stage from June 1 to 2, and an offline knockout and final stage from June 8 to 11. The debate topics were diverse, covering a wide range of issues and contemporary themes. They not only included social issues such as philanthropy, renewable energy, and public healthcare, but also addressed current hot topics like artificial intelligence and university students' career choices. These topics not only tested the participants' knowledge and critical thinking skills but also inspired students to actively undertake their mission in the new era.
Tongji University had two teams that advanced to the national finals from the East China Regional and Open Competitions. After intense competition, the team consisting of YANG Ying from the English Department of the School of Foreign Studies and XU Zhiming from Guohao School achieved 5th place and made it into the top 32 teams nationwide, earning first place in the Beijing offline competition and being recognized as the Best Debaters in the country. Another team, consisting of GU Yi and SHEN Congzheng from the English Department, won second place nationally.
